What a move in Berlin actually costs
Most moving companies in Berlin answer this with “it depends”. It does depend — on size, floor, lift and distance. But that is no reason to hide the rates. Here they are, all of them, and further down you will find what a whole apartment comes to.

All amounts on this page are final prices for private customers and already include 19 % German VAT — nothing is added later. German invoices use a comma as the decimal separator, so €220.00 appears as 220,00 € on your paperwork. The number in your quote is a ceiling, not a guess
We charge by the hour, but your written quote contains one figure that we do not go above. Finish early and you pay for the hours actually worked — so the price goes down, never up. Take longer than planned and that is our problem, not your budget.
This matters more than it sounds. A “flat rate” quoted without seeing your flat always contains a safety margin that you pay for even when nothing goes wrong. With a capped hourly price you know the worst case and pay the real one.

The part nobody explains
German moving rules, in plain English
None of this is our job as movers — but every week somebody finds out about it too late, so here it is. Five rules that cost real money if you miss them.
§ 17 Bundesmeldegesetz
You must register within two weeks
After moving in you have 14 days to register your new address at a Bürgeramt. The catch is not the rule, it is the appointment: free slots in Berlin are often weeks away.
Book the Bürgeramt appointment the day your rental contract is signed — not after the move. The fine can reach four figures, although in practice a short delay is usually treated mildly.
§ 19 Bundesmeldegesetz
Your landlord must confirm the move in writing
Without the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung — a signed confirmation from your landlord that you actually moved in — the Bürgeramt will not register you, even with an appointment.
Ask for it when you sign the contract. Landlords know the form; new tenants usually do not, and then lose the appointment they waited weeks for.
§ 551 BGB
The deposit is capped at three months
A landlord may ask for at most three months' cold rent (rent without utilities) as a deposit — and you are entitled to pay it in three monthly instalments, not all at once.
If somebody asks for more than three months, or refuses instalments, that is not standard practice. It is worth questioning before you sign.
§ 573c BGB
Three months' notice — and the third working day
As a tenant you normally give three months' notice, and the letter must arrive by the third working day of the month for that month to count.
Miss it by a day and you pay one extra month of rent — often more than the entire move costs. Send it in writing and keep proof of delivery.
Handover
“Besenrein” and the painting question
Besenrein means broom-clean: swept, emptied, no rubbish left. It does not mean professionally cleaned, whatever anyone tells you at the door.
Whether you must repaint depends on your contract. German courts have repeatedly held that standard clauses requiring redecoration are invalid if the flat was handed to you unrenovated. Read the clause before you buy paint — and if you do need it done, we can do it: painting services.
§ 451e · § 451f HGB
What happens if something breaks
By law a moving company is liable for €620 per cubic metre of loading space needed. For an average household that is plenty; for one very valuable item it is not — tell us beforehand and we will look at it together.
Deadlines matter: visible damage must be reported at delivery, damage you notice later within two weeks, in writing. Miss the deadline and the claim is gone even if nobody disputes the damage.
One more thing that catches people out: in Berlin you cannot simply park a 7.5-tonne van outside your building. Without an official no-parking zone the crew carries everything from wherever the van fits — and you pay for those extra hours. The permit costs €80.00 per address and has to be ordered days in advance, because the signs must stand before the move for a car parked there to be towed.

What makes moving in Berlin different
Three things drive the price here far more than distance does.
Old buildings, no lift
Much of Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg is pre-1918 Altbau: beautiful, high ceilings — and often a fourth floor with no lift and a staircase too narrow for a sofa. A lift on both sides can cut the price of the same flat by roughly a third.
The back courtyard
Berlin flats are often in a Seitenflügel or a second courtyard, 60 metres further from the street than the front building. Two hundred trips later, that distance is the bill. We count it in the quote instead of adding it on the day.
Parking is the real bottleneck
In the inner districts there is no free space for a moving van, ever. The €80 permit is the most reliable saving in the whole quote — it usually costs less than the hours it saves.

Do your movers really speak English?
Yes. From the first message to moving day — quotes, questions and coordination all happen in English. Our team also speaks German and Arabic.
How much does a moving company in Berlin cost?
Two movers with a van cost €220.00 for the first three hours, VAT included. The minimum booking is two hours at €150.00, and each further hour beyond three is €99.00. Are your prices net or gross?
Every figure on this page is the final price for private customers, with 19 % German VAT already included. Nothing is added afterwards. Businesses are invoiced net plus VAT so they can reclaim it — see company relocations.
What exactly is a “capped price”?
Your quote contains one number we do not exceed. We bill the hours actually worked, so finishing early means you pay less. Taking longer than estimated is our risk, not yours. It is the honest middle ground between an open hourly bill and a flat rate padded with a safety margin.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
No. No deposit, no advance payment. Under German freight law the fee falls due on delivery and we keep to that — you see the finished job first, then the invoice.
Can I book movers without a van?
Yes, €25.00 per person and hour, minimum two hours. That works if you already rented a van, or if you are moving within the same building. If you need transport we bring the right size vehicle.
Is there a student rate?
Yes. With a valid enrolment certificate every mover hour is 28 % cheaper: €18.00 instead of €25.00 per person and hour. Details on Studentenumzug.
Do you charge extra for Saturdays or evenings?
No. Saturday costs the same as Tuesday, and so does an evening slot. Many Berlin companies add 10 to 30 % for weekends; we do not. Only Sundays are closed for phone enquiries.
How far in advance should I book?
Three to four weeks is comfortable, mainly because the parking permit takes that long in Berlin. Month-end dates and the summer fill up first. Short notice often still works — call and we will tell you straight away.
What is a Halteverbot and do I need one?
It is an official temporary no-parking zone that keeps space free for the van right outside your building. In the inner districts it is close to essential: it costs €80.00 per address and usually saves more than that in carrying time. We apply for it and put up the signs.
Do you also move out of Berlin?
Yes, anywhere in Germany. The first 30 kilometres carry no travel charge; beyond that it is €1.55 per kilometre driven, counted there and back. Prices for fourteen destination cities are listed on Fernumzug.
How do I get a quote?
